Extended Description
The Tierce letters were revealed through the scholarship of Edythe Quinn Caro, in her 1988 M.A. Thesis, "The Hills" in the Mid-Nineteenth Century: The History of a Rural Afro-American Community in Westchester County, New York. As Ms. Caro notes, the letters are attachments to "Widow's Pension Claim, Case of Sarah Jane [Tierce] Depau, No. 257.715." [also spelled Depew]. Transcriptions are courtesy of Ms. Caro.
