The End of the War

The year of 1864 culminated in another presidential election. Lincoln again lost in Westchester by a margin similar to that of the 1860 election. The 1864 election numbers show that George McClellan, the Democratic candidate, received 9,353 votes in the county, and that Lincoln received 7,593. The war ended several months later, when General Lee surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865.
