The document contains the requisite declaration by the local overseer of the poor that the woman to be freed had been "examined…[and found to be] under the age of forty-five years, and capable of providing for herself." New York State, in an effort to prevent slaveowners from turning less productive older slaves out of their houses, required an examination by local officials in order to confirm that slaves to be freed were relatively young and capable of supporting themselves.
