Lincoln's
death united the people of Westchester as his politics in life never
had. On Tuesday, April 25, 1865, Lincoln again passed through Peekskill,
this time as his funeral train traveled north along the Hudson toward
its ultimate destination of Springfield, Illinois. The
New York Times reported how every station along the line turned
out for the funeral cortege. The Ossining station displayed a banner
over the tracks. In Peekskill, "Flags and mottoes were here
displayed, and a band of music performed a funeral march, greatly
