Reward Poster for Runaway Slave,
October 14, 1800
Although New York State passed a law abolishing slavery in 1799, the law provided
that slavery be ended gradually. This was to prevent slaves from being tossed
out into the street with no way to provide for themselves. Slavery in New York
finally came to an end in 1827. Samuel Lyon, a farmer in Bedford, hoped this
poster would aid in returning one of his slaves to his farm.
