Westchester County Defense Council Questionnaires,
ca. 1941-1945
County residents who wanted to help defend the homeland during World War
II were asked by the Westchester County Defense Council to complete questionnaires.
The four samples shown here were by Bedford residents of widely varied backgrounds
and interests. Philip Watts, a stockbroker with a degree from Harvard, was
one of the founders of the Bedford Defense Unit, which numbered over 50 members.
Mrs. A. M. Anderson, a housewife who was interested in camouflage, could speak
French and owned a seven-passenger Cadillac. Mary Blazek was a student who
was interested in first aid training, and Chris Shea described himself as a “handy
all around man.”
