Ledger of Town Accounts, 1791-1860
This early ledger book documents the Town of Harrison’s early commitment
to those in their community who were unable to care for themselves. It records
the expenditures of the Overseers of the Poor over a 69-year period, and shows
the community subsidizing its neediest citizens. The expenditures cover various
kinds of temporary support, as well as the expenses of funerals. Our modern
welfare system grew out of these early public acts of charity.
