Robert Havell Oil Painting, ca. 1841
Robert Havell, best known for his exquisite engravings of John James Audubon’s
bird paintings, came to Ossining from England in 1839. Havell engraved all but
the first 10 plates of Audubon’s Birds of America, which was first
published in 10 large volumes in 1840. What is less well known is that Robert
Havell was a talented painter. This painting is entitled “Hudson River
North to Croton Point.” Havell moved to Tarrytown in 1857 and died there
in 1878 at the age of 85.
