Tax Assessment Roll, Town of Pelham, 1821
This is the tax assessment roll for the Town of Pelham prepared in 1821. At
the time, the Town of Pelham included City Island and much of today’s
Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx. New York City annexed those portions of Pelham
in the mid-1890s leaving a much smaller town. Mainland residents often differed
with the residents of City Island over tax issues. Thus, two assessors prepared
this assessment: Mainlander David J. Pell who lived in the home known as Pelhamdale,
which still stands at 45 Iden Avenue in Pelham, and City Islander George W. Horton,
a notable early resident.
