Incorporated first in 1871 as the Village of North Tarrytown in the Town of Mount Pleasant, this Hudson River community changed its name to Sleepy Hollow in 1996. The village and its surrounding area had long been known as Sleepy Hollow. Originally Sleepy Hollow was a 1655 reference by early Dutch settler Adriaen Van der Donck to the Pocantico River, which he termed “Slappershaven” or “Sleeper’s haven.” Writer Washington Irving immortalized it in his story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” Today the village still boasts the Old Dutch Church, Philipsburg Manor and the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
