Circus Advertisement,
1840
This 1840 broadside is an advertisement for a circus performance at The Bowery
Amphitheatre, a well-known venue for menagerie and circus acts in New York City.
The amphitheatre was originally owned by the Zoological Institute, which had
been established in 1835 in Somers by over 100 menagerie owners and managers.
The Institute purchased the theatre to provide space where their traveling shows
could be held in the winter. The Somers Historical Society has over 100 of these
rare broadsides, which represent one of the earliest forms of advertising in
the U.S. This particular example is one of the first to be printed in color.
