John Jay Letter, 1794

John Jay, a governor of New York State and the first chief justice of the United States Supreme Court, was in London in 1794 negotiating a treaty with the British government to secure enforcement and amplification of the Treaty of Peace of 1783, which ended the Revolution.  While Jay was apart  from his wife, Sarah Livingston Jay, he wrote to her weekly. One of these letters is dated November 21, 1794, and it is especially significant because in it he reports that his “mission has been successful.” A treaty was signed, and while it was unpopular in many parts of the new nation, it was ratified by the United States Senate.
