David Jerome Sands, born in 1814 in Chappaqua, was graduated
from the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Columbia University
in 1840. His obstetrical practice was in Port Chester, and he maintained
a record of the births he attended during the first 12 years of
his practice. It is a rare example of 19th-century medical history
in Westchester County. The record book notes the parents’ names,
residence, sex and name of the child, and remarks concerning the
delivery. Dr. Sands continued his practice in Port Chester until
his death in 1888.
