|
Caleb Tompkins of Scarsdale was appointed the first judge of the Westchester County Court of Common Pleas on March 10, 1808. His appointment was signed by his older brother, Daniel D. Tompkins, then Governor of New York State and later Vice-President of the United States. Judge Tompkins served for about 20 years and then was compelled to retire at the age of 60. The next year the state legislature abolished the age limit, and he was reappointed, continuing as a judge until he was over 80. This record is also associated with: |
