The first federal census was taken in 1790, and a federal census has been done at the beginning of each decade ever since. New York State began doing a census mid-decade beginning in 1825, although the only complete state censuses for Westchester County to survive are for the years 1905, 1915 and 1925. Copies of these censuses are held in the Westchester County Archives.
This census is one of the few for 1845 that have survived for Westchester communities. It enumerates residents of White Plains by gender, race, citizenship status, and eligibility for service in the military. It also includes specific details about agricultural uses of the land, such as how many acres were planted with buckwheat, oats and corn, as well as the value of goods produced by various small factories. In addition, it lists the number of hotels, stores, tradesmen and professionals in the community in 1845.
