Women
in Westchester
The Elusive "Average" Woman Published histories, particularly pre-twentieth century American histories, tend to focus on the lives of men. Documents concerning Westchester during the time of the Civil War contain narratives of patriotism and politics, mobilization and morality. Men are usually the heroes of these narratives, be they fictional or official. The fact that the authors and chroniclers have usually been men helps to explain the dearth of historical documentation concerning women.
