One local arm of the WCAR, the Soldiers Aid Society of Katonah, NY received a commendation from the WCAR for its work in providing aid. The document's signatories include Louisa Lee Schuyler, one of the founding members of the WCAR. Schuyler was the granddaughter of James Alexander Hamilton and spent summers on his estate in Irvington. In
Ossining the Sing Sing Union Relief Association raised $3,766.88
over the course of the war, and sent over nine thousand garments
to the camps. These are remarkable feats, yet the final report of
the association provides an even more fascinating insight into the
motivations of the associations' members.
