Photoprint of Painting (1902-1914) of Fleischmann Company Factory Complex, 1975
The Fleischmann Company, the largest maker of yeast and yeast by-products in the world, was founded by Charles Fleischmann and his brother in Ohio in the last quarter of the 19th century. By 1900 the company had established a large factory complex at Charles Point in Buchanan. The complex pictured here provided generations of local men and women good-paying union jobs.
In 1929 the Fleishmann Company was one of the original companies that merged to form Standard Brands. During World War II the factory laboratories developed a dry packaged yeast recognized by the U. S. Army and Navy with five “E” for Excellence awards. When the company left Buchanan in 1977, it was a severe economic setback for the Buchanan/Peekskill area.
