Photograph of Indian Point,
June 9, 1983
The country’s first nuclear power plant, Indian Point, was opened in Buchanan by Consolidated Edison Corp. in 1962. The plant supplies approximately 40% of the electrical energy needs of Westchester and the lower Hudson Valley. Over the years the plant has had an uneasy relationship with Westchester County due to concerns over a catastrophic accident and radioactive buildup. These concerns, however, are counterbalanced by relatively low-cost, clean energy.
This photograph shows the plant in 1983. It is located on a site which has seen a brickyard, a yeast factory and an amusement park. Since 2000 the plant has been owned and operated by Entergy Corp.
