Camp Smith was opened by New York State in 1882 to train the Volunteer State Militia, which became the New York State National Guard. The original site was leased from the McCoy family, but in 1885 New York purchased the McCoy property, along with a few adjacent parcels. Camp Smith is used for small unit exercises, maneuvers and marksmanship, and vehicle and tank driving training. These images show soldiers from 1898, during the Spanish American War, and the camp as it looked in the 1920s.
