The Valeria Home was established in Cortlandt in 1924 by Valeria Knapp Langeloth with money set aside by her husband in his will. Its goal was to provide moderate-income persons "of education and refinement" rest and relaxation at a price they could afford. Located on over 500 acres, the home featured lovely accommodations, mountain trails, boating, outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, library and a Field House. The home closed in 1973, when the Langeloth Foundation was no longer able to subsidize it. Today it is a private residential community.
