Anchor Brewing Company Calendar,
1897
Brewing beer was big business in Westchester in the 19th century. Anchor
Brewing Company was founded by Peter Biegen in 1856 as the Hudson River Brewing
Company. In 1886 the company was taken over by the Anchor Brewing Company,
which had many German-immigrant employees. In 1900 the company became the Manilla-Anchor
Brewing Company. It was thought that the beer brewed in Dobbs Ferry was exceptionally
good because of the water which came from Wicker’s Creek collect ponds.
