Post Cards of Dobbs Ferry Scenes,
ca. 1910
These post cards give the viewer a sense of what the village of Dobbs
Ferry looked like in the first quarter of the 20th century. The roads were
still unpaved and the horse and buggy was far more commonplace than the automobile.
Estherwood, built in 1895 by wealthy inventor and real-estate developer James
Jennings McComb, has been the main building of the Masters School since 1910.
It looks today remarkably like it did in 1910. The beautiful wooden bridge
over a rocky ravine was located on the Dobbs Ferry estate of Edwin Gould,
second-oldest son of railroad baron and financial speculator Jay Gould. The
two churches shown here, Sacred Heart and Zion Episcopal, are still active
in the Dobbs Ferry community.
