A Record of Births, Marriages and Deaths in the Town of Harrison,
1847-1865
Vital records, which include birth, marriage and death records, have traditionally
been held in the municipal clerk’s office. This is still true today.
However, from 1881 to the present, New York State requires municipal clerks
to keep vital records and to file a copy of these records with the state. This
law was needed because so many vital records were either not filed or had been
lost, and there was no duplicate record.
The fact that Harrison still retains records from this early period is very unusual.
The records provide much information especially important to genealogists. The
birth records provide dates and parent information; the marriage records provide
names and dates, as well as where the marriage took place; and the death record
provides name, date, cause of death in some cases, and occupation.
