Blueprint of the City of New Rochelle Approach Signs, 1922
During the early part of the 20th century, New Rochelle had a thriving art
community, which was active in providing the City with excellent public art.
The entrance signs to the City were designed by members of the New Rochelle
Art Association who included some of the most famous illustrators of their
day. Among those who designed signs were Norman Rockwell, Remington Schuyler,
Fred Dana Marsh, Ralph F. Richardson, Frederic Stanley, Clare A. Briggs, Colcord
Heurlin, George T. Tobin, Lawrence M. Loeb and Edward Penfield. The entrance
signs designed in the early 1920s have graced the entrances to New Rochelle
for over 75 years. This blueprint indicates who created each sign, where it
was to be erected, and how it might be replicated, if necessary.
