Chief Hollow Horn Bear Photograph, 1901
Steamboat magnate John Starin created the Glen Island resort, just off the shore of New Rochelle, in the latter
part of the 19th century. It had restaurants, picnic areas, a zoo, aviary, natural science museum, Chinese pagoda,
German beer garden, and a miniature railway. In 1901 Starin transported a tribe of Sioux Indians to his resort. Chief
Hollow Horn Bear posed for this picture in Glen Island’s photographic studios.
Glen Island was the largest and most famous of the many waterfront resorts and hotels that made New Rochelle a premier
resort destination from the mid-1800s through the first quarter of the 20th century.
