The Personal War Sketches and Accounts, begun in 1897, contains the service records of those who were members of the Flandreau Post #509 at that time. The Post was formed by New Rochelle veterans of the Grand Army of the Republic. The Civil War service of each member was carefully recorded and certified by the Post Historian. Members’ post-service lives were also documented. The preface to the volume concludes by saying the volume is dedicated “to the last surviving comrade of the Post.”
Excerpts from the minutes of Flandreau Post #509 are also provided here. Survivors of America’s Civil War attended meetings well into the 20th century.
