Letter to the Editor regarding Thomas Paine, “New-York Spectator," July 15,
1806
In appreciation of Thomas Paine’s outstanding service in rallying the
country behind the cause of American independence, the State of New York awarded
him a farm in New Rochelle in 1784. Paine lived there from 1804 through 1806.
In the summer of 1806, an incident occurred which was made much of in the press.
A New Rochelle man sought to set the record straight in a letter to the editor
of the New-York Spectator. The author of the letter believed that
calling the incident an “assassination attempt” was overblown.
