Upper Mill Deed, June 2, 1761 and Codicil, July 6, 1784
Phillipsburg Manor Indenture, 1761
Codicil, 1784
This document is of special interest as it both pre-dates and post-dates
the American Revolution. It also contains the names of many families important
in the history of the county, including Philipse, Pugsley, Beekman and Paulding.
The indenture gives a detailed description of the Upper Mill in the Manor
of Philipsburg and the surrounding area as it was in 1761. In addition, it
references the slaves of the manor, the Old Dutch Church and its cemetery.
The rights and finances of the transaction are also described in detail.
The 1784 codicil transfers the lease for the Upper Mill property to Gerard G.
Beekman, Jr. (1746-1822.) Beekman bought the property outright in 1785 from the
Commissioners of Forfeitures, which had confiscated the property from Loyalist
Frederick Philipse (1720-1785.)
