Pocantico Gazette, Sept. 1846
Thought to be the first newspaper in Tarrytown, the Pocantico Gazette was
published by Jacob Odell, merchant and first mayor of the village, in September
1846. Odell named his newspaper “Pocantico,” the Native American
word for “a stream between two hills.” In this first issue, Odell
stated that he was “uncertain if another number will be issued,” and
he did not publish any more after the first. The format, however, was adopted
by the students at the Irving Institute, who called their new paper the Irving
Banner.
