Helen Gould inherited the Hudson River estate “Lyndhurst” from her father, railroad magnate Jay Gould, in 1892. Ms. Gould was a philanthropist who made her magnificent home and grounds available to the community in many ways. She established several programs at Lyndhurst to educate and benefit children in the Tarrytown area. One of these programs was the Lyndhurst Sewing School. The photograph, made from a stereoptical slide, was taken on opening day in 1905. The workbook shows examples of the kind of embroidery done by the young girls who participated in the sewing school.
