Washington Irving (1783-1859) was the first American to earn his living as a writer. His short stories “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “Rip Van Winkle” are deeply woven into the fabric of American culture. He also wrote the five-volume Life of George Washington, the American hero for whom he was named. Irving traveled extensively in Europe and served as U.S. Ambassador to Spain from 1842-1845. In 1835, he purchased Sunnyside, his home in Tarrytown.
