Assessor's Record of 1863 Deaths,
1864
This unique volume is the only one of its type in White Plains.
It is a recording of deaths in White Plains for the year ending
December 31,1863, pursuant to Chapter 380 of the Laws of 1864,
which designated the local assessor to collect the information
as part of his duties in visiting residences. Sadly, Assessor Benjamin
G. Disbrow reported the death of his own six year old son from
diphtheria. These records are useful to genealogists and historians
researching the community during the Civil War era.
Since 1880-81,
the Registrar of Vital Records (City Clerk) in White Plains has
maintained the local copy of the birth, death and marriage records
for New York State, with the originals being filed in Albany at
the Dept. of Health, Vital Records Bureau. This ministerial function
is handled by the municipal clerk’s office in all Westchester
communities.
