The White Plains War Mothers' Files,
ca. 1918
The War Mothers’ group in White
Plains kept records for all the men and women from White Plains
who served in World War I. They contain a great deal of vital information
about each individual, including date and place of birth, name
of parents and/or spouse, home address, date of enlistment, branch
of service and rank, engagements, decorations and place of burial,
if deceased. The collection also includes an illustrated banner.
One
of the records displayed here is for Edith Jones, a White Plains
resident and high school teacher who volunteered in the YMCA canteens
in France. Ms. Jones is one of 30 women from White Plains who served
in World War I. The other records shown here detail the battlefield
valor of two White Plains young men who were killed in action,
having made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Many of the
records include newspaper clippings, which appeared in the local
paper.
