Stephanus Van Cortlandt bought land from the Native Americans and early settlers in 1677. In 1697 it became a Manor, which extended from the Manor of Philipsburg, at the mouth of the Croton River, north beyond Anthonys Nose on the Hudson River and 20 miles to the east. In 1732 the Manor was surveyed and divided among Van Cortlandt’s heirs, and it is this area that became the Town of Cortlandt in 1788. During the Revolutionary War, Cortlandt was the site of many skirmishes.
