These documents all relate to Miss Mason’s School, a private girls’ school in Tarrytown, which was located in a magnificent mansion known as The Castle. Designed by noted architect A. J. Davis and built in 1854-56 for John J. Herrick, it had several occupants prior to its purchase by Miss C. E. Mason in 1895. Miss Mason’s school closed in the 1930s. Since The Castle was razed in 1944, these records provide important evidence of its existence, as well as insights into the education of women in the first half of the 20th century.
